Combat Proficiencies, Force Powers, Skills and Backgrounds are all considered Ranked Traits. You can purchase up to three Ranks in Ranked Traits. It is possible to have more than three Ranks in a Ranked Trait but only through bonus Ranks provided by Perks, Path Special Abilities and Species Abilities. Be sure to note the difference terms 'bonus Rank' and 'free Rank.' Bonus Ranks can take a trait over 3 and are listed with a plus sign and its source in parentheses after the normal Ranks in the Bio. For example, Force Lightning: 2+1 (Force Power Focus). Free Ranks function exactly like a normal Rank purchased with a point except that it does not cost a point.
