Among those few who know of this place, Bast Castle is most renowned as Darth Vader's personal estate. Since Vader's death the Castle has been alternatively abandoned or taken over by various Dark Side groups. Ultimately, the Castle came under the control of Darth Aristo, a man who claims to have been Vader's secret Sith Apprentice. Aristo governs Bast, and the planet on which it is built, for the New Sith Brotherhood. However, Vjun is mostly isolated, even from the rest of the Obsidian Union, and it is rare even for Sith to ever see Bast Castle's interior.
As the shuttle passed through the cloud cover into the oddly colored light that covered Vjun's surface below, Chi-Ki-Meyee felt she had not arrived on another planet so much as entered some bizarre dream. The Cerean was still in a state of disbelief over the events of the past several weeks. Awakening from a two year coma to discover that her friends had left her to die almost paled in comparison to a fact that was only gradually beginning to sink in: she had agreed to join the Sith. Over the course of her recovery, Chi had plenty of time to think about why she had done it but, truthfully, used very little of her time for that purpose. She supposed now that part of her had hoped that, in not thinking about it, the situation would just go away but, as she gazed out the viewport, Chi-Ki realized the futility of that half-thought hope. This planet was awash in the Dark Side and the looming, monolithic structure the shuttle was approaching even more so.
The ship had been docked for some time before Chi-Ki-Meyee mustered the resolve to descend its gangway. The hangar she exited into was made of durasteel the color of midnight, meticulously polished to sheen, and its cavernous confines were sparsely decorated with Imperial-era statuary. A human man, strong in the Force and wearing crimson armor, approached the Cerean with great determination in his stride. His icy eyes regarded her with a ruthless awareness.
Chi had never met the man she now saw in the hanger while she was in recovery. In fact she had met few Sith. Chi gave the man a polite greeting before walking closer up to him. As she got closer she studied his armor, she had yet to ever see crimson colored armor. By his strength in the force Chi could assume this was her new master.
"Welcome to Bast Castle," the Sith said in a gravely voice, "I am Darth Aristo and have been tasked with your initial training. You have come to this place as a Jedi; I have been told of your situation and it is obvious to me that have only agreed to this course to save your life. By the the time you leave this place you will have, through fire and blood, become a Sith in truth. This instruction will not be like what you remember from your Jedi days, nor am I one of these young Sith who scoff at the old ways of teaching Apprentices. Many of the tasks I set you will carry the risk of death, most will threaten serious injury and all will be painful. You must succeed at any cost if you wish to survive this experience. War is on the horizon and I won't permit you to sully my name by falling to the Brotherhood's enemies. Now, come, we begin immediately."
Turning, Darth Aristo wordlessly led Chi-Ki-Meyee through the nightmarishly labyrinthine halls of the Castle. At last he opened a door which led into a decent-sized, rectangular room which had racks of weapons, armor and other training implements lined up against its walls.
"This is where you will learn what it means to be Sith," Aristo began, "We will begin with the foundation. To fight like a Sith you must first learn to think and feel like a Sith. If one is not Sith in heart then they are not Sith in battle. You know the Jedi Code already but now you will hear the true Code, the Sith Code."
"Peace is a lie, there is only passion Through passion I gain strength Through strength I gain power Through power I gain victory Through victory my chains are broken The Force shall set me free"
Chi-Ki was struck by the great reverence with which Aristo spoke this collection of interconnected mantras, treating them with religious significance.
"Every Sith has heard these words when their training began and every one has been asked the question I ask you now," Aristo continued, "What does the Code say to you?"
Chi stood there surprised by the fact that the Sith was able to tell she had mainly agreed to be trained as a Sith to save her own life.
Turning her attention to the Sith Code, Chi let the words repeat in her head. She carefully studied each line before giving her final answer to the Sith. "The Code says to me, through my own devotion to the Sith that I will grow stronger, with this new found strength I will be able to accomplish anything. Even break away from my Jedi ties. The force was meant to set us free and yet the Jedi use it to create order," Chi-Ki finished and looked up into Darth Aristo's cold eyes looking for a hint of that being the right answer.
"Time will tell whether you mean what you have said or if you are merely saying what you must," Aristo responded, in what was perhaps the least satisfying notification of success Chi-Ki had received in any lesson. The Sith Master approached one of the weapon racks, removed two maces and handed one to her.
"Your time spent comatose will have robbed you of many capabilities," Aristo said, "Let's see if you can still hold your own in basic combat."
He then raised his mace and swung a two-handed strike at Chi's right shoulder.
Chi attempted to block the blow with her own mace. Then tried to make two calculated swings, first one to Aristo's right shoulder and the second she tried to knock the mace out of his hand. She was surprised by the sudden combat, she was so used to how the Jedi give one lessens first then slowly teach the rest.
Chi-Ki felt heavy vibrations in her shoulders as she brought the center of her mace handle up, impacting it where head and handle met on Aristo's mace in a block. Chi then disengaged and swung at Aristo's shoulder, but a step back and to the left brought the Sith Master out of the weapon's path. The Cerean redirected her blow sideways in an attempt to sweep Aristo's mace from his grasp but he once again maneuvered around the attack and aimed a strike at Chi's now-exposed back.
Chi used her downward momentum to tumble out of the Aristo's reach. Hopping back up onto her feet she then waited for Aristo to engage again. She held her mace with both hands and watched his every move.
"Well, it seems your grasp of the fundamentals is no worse for the wear. Better than many beginners I've trained, in fact," Aristo commented, his face betraying the slightest hint of approval for the first time, "But you've still much to learn about wielding a mace specifically. Continue to watch my movements as we proceed, you should be able to pick up what I'm doing quickly enough. Now, what prior experience do you have with armor?"
When Chi replied that she had none, Aristo stated this would have to be rectified. He indicated a suit of armor and showed her how to put it on.
"I suppose you'll have to skip the helmet though," Aristo mused as Chi-Ki removed her outer robes, donned the armor over her inner robes then placed the over robes back on top of the armor, "Until I am satisfied that you are acclimatized to moving in this armor you are to keep it on at all times, even outside of training."
The instant Chi-Ki was finished Aristo renewed the combat. Quickly gripping the handle of Chi-Ki's weapon with his left hand, Aristo tugged with a vigor that threatened to pull the mace loose if she did not maintain a firm, two-handed grip. At the same time, the Sith Master swung his mace with his right hand at Chi's left flank.
